My Story
Hi! I’m Mikayla.
A little about me
I've never been particularly good at fitting into a mold, and honestly, I'm not sure I've ever really tried.
I'm a little sarcastic, a little unconventional, and almost always myself. I have tattoos, my hair is rarely its natural color, and I have a pretty high tolerance for awkward situations, unexpected chaos, and the occasional questionable idea. I'm also a mom and former teacher, which means I know how to read a room, when to let things unfold, and when it's time to use my “mom” voice.
But above all, I genuinely like people. I don't judge easily, I try to help whenever I can, and I believe most people are a lot more comfortable being themselves when they don't feel like they're being evaluated.
That carries directly into my photography.
The photography part
I started taking senior photos during my own senior year of high school, and somehow, more than 17 years later, I'm still finding new ways to love this job.
Over the years, I've photographed everything from births and seniors to weddings, families, sports, professional headshots, mobile birthday celebrations, bar mitzvahs, and plenty of things in between. Every type of session has taught me something — about photography, about people, and about how to handle just about anything that can happen in front of a camera.
While I've loved the variety, I'm now focusing more intentionally on seniors and weddings.
Seniors are especially close to my heart. I love the creativity, the personalities, the energy, and the fact that we can create something that feels completely unique to the person in front of my camera. I also happen to get along really well with that age group, although I'm increasingly reminded of my own age every time I reference an artist like Shania Twain or make a pose suggestion that apparently belongs in a museum.
Weddings hold a different kind of importance for me. There is something incredibly special about being trusted to document the moments, relationships, and emotions that make a wedding day what it is. The responsibility is significant, but so is the privilege of being there for it.
What it's like to work with me
I want you to love your images, but I also want you to genuinely enjoy the experience of getting them.
I'm not interested in making you feel like you have to perform perfectly for the camera. I want you to laugh, relax, be yourself, and have a good time. At the same time, I'm invested in giving you the best images I possibly can. If that means redirecting you, interrupting a story, or telling you to stop talking for approximately three seconds so I can get the shot, I will. Usually with humor. Always because I want the result to be worth it.
I care about the experience just as much as I care about the final gallery.
I take my work seriously, even if I don't always take myself seriously. I hold myself to a high standard, I'm constantly learning, and I care deeply about delivering images that I'm proud of and that my clients are excited to have. I believe in being accountable, continuing to grow, and always doing my best to make sure people feel well taken care of.
My work, without the unnecessary polish
My photography isn't completely unlike what you'll find around here. There are plenty of talented photographers creating beautiful work with natural light, outdoor settings, bright imagery, moody imagery, and genuine moments.
I'm not trying to pretend I've invented a completely new category of photography.
But I also don't want to keep presenting myself as some overly polished, perfectly “timeless and elegant” version of a photographer just because that's what a photography website is expected to sound like.
My work can be beautiful without me pretending to be someone I'm not.
I can create something elegant, something emotional, something fun, or something completely unexpected. I can dress appropriately for the setting, read the environment, respect the people I'm working with, and still be entirely myself.
That's the direction I want this business to reflect more of: beautiful photography, a real personality, and an experience that doesn't feel like everyone else's.
Life outside the camera
I live with my husband, who goes above and beyond every day to make my life better, easier, and more fulfilling, and our three kids - Jacob (14), Jaxon (9), and Montana (1).
Life is busy, loud, occasionally chaotic, and full of little moments that we wouldn't trade for anything. We cherish the ordinary stuff just as much as the big milestones, and I think that perspective has shaped the way I photograph people.
The big moments matter. But so do the little ones you don't realize you'll miss until years later.
A little more transparency
I'm also making a conscious effort to be more transparent about my business, including posting my pricing.
I believe you should be able to look through my website, understand what I offer, see what it costs, and decide whether we're a good fit without having to jump through unnecessary hoops.
No guessing games. No pretending pricing is a secret.
Just a photographer who cares about her work, cares about her clients, and is finally letting her online presence look a little more like the actual person behind the camera.
XOXO,
Mikayla Pray
